Utrecht University - Dairy farmView of the dairy farm from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, Utrecht, Netherlands. It gives a good picture of a typical dairy farm in the Netherlands. CommentsOctober 26, 2009 Mac:Seems cleaner than most dairy farms I've seen, BUT still it's unnecessary to keep them chained in one spot. It's unhealthy for the animal, thus making it unhealthy for human consumption. Regardless of wether or not these animals know any better - it's still cruel! October 27, 2009 Bert:It does seem to be a very clean operation indeed as the 2 previous comments have said. And as a former dairy man. I can see these cows are not in the same place all the time. If you look at the 1 brown cow in the pictures. It is in the 3rd from the end, Then again 2nd from the end, And yet in another its further away from the wall at the end of the line. October 27, 2009 Bert:Plus depending on the weather for the time of the year. They maybe staying in out of cold weather, and from laying on very cold ground as well. Thus preventing them from becoming sick and getting medicine pushed to them and preventing there milk from being drinkable, or usable in anyway for anything. October 27, 2009 Evan O'Shea:excuse me, why are these animals chained to these bars and not moving freely? October 28, 2009 Lore:This makes me sick. Every life deserves dignity at least. This is deplorable. October 29, 2009 Ryan:I grew up on a dairy farm. All of you who are commenting on a couple of feeds without living the life, go try it. We do all that we can for the animals... October 30, 2009 John:As a dairy farmer's son I can only say that we never kept cows tied after milking. once milking is complete all cows are released to pasture, if they choose to go under cover a large shed is available to them. October 30, 2009 amy:Do these cows get to roam around at all? surely this is cruel....i have clicked on this website 4 times over 24hrs and the cows seem to be in the same place as before, Does anybody know there well being? its really upsetting. Amy October 30, 2009 amy:Yea fair do's John, But they are chained up...it looks really uncomfortable . Amy October 31, 2009 thgirbla:Is there a Chapter of the SPCA in the Netherlands??? November 1, 2009 Matt:They're food, who cares? November 1, 2009 Charlie:The Bible states "A cow and her calf were not to be killed on the same day" (Lev. 22:28; Ex. 23:19; Deut. 22:6, 7) So, Yeah. Sugar my puffs. November 2, 2009 Tissio:I can see a over sized tit too... Do you think they take hormones? November 3, 2009 toco:Tissio, you are spending far too much time looking into your mirror. Find something simpler to reflect on. November 4, 2009 James:Did anyone read the header, it is the department of Veterinary medicine at a University. Has anyone in this forum given thought that perhaps the animal doctors, or students are perhaps treating these animals that are tied to the rail? Just a thought, rather than over reacting to a video feed and comment based upon politically correct peer pressure. And we wonder why we are failing as a nation! November 5, 2009 Ianto:Oh Golly Gosh, James please lend me your Super Soap Box, you are so clever. November 5, 2009 James:At least I can read! November 5, 2009 James:And think! November 5, 2009 James:For myself! November 5, 2009 Karen:These cows look sooo skinny !!! I lived on a farm, and had holstein cows and they were never that skinny. You can see the ribs ! November 5, 2009 Karen:and it says it shows a typical dairy farm in the Netherlands..hmmmm November 6, 2009 James:I myself grew up on a dairy farm in southern Idaho. We milked 250 head of Holsteins. We had a small hospital that looked similar to the shot you see on the dairy cam. The cows were tied up when being treated and yes, when they are ill they sometimes lose weight and look sick. Our milking parlor was much different, but there are milking parlors that are on ground level, but usually there is a headstall to contain the cow while being milked. I don't see any milkers in the shot, so the most reasonable assumption is that it is the hospital portion of the operation. November 21, 2009 Diane:I just saw the cutest little calf being born a short time ago. Two female attendants picked it up by the front and back legs and put it in a cart and took it away with the mother looking back at them. I wonder what happens to that calf next without a mother to care for it. The neck chains would not permit it to do so, along with the close quarters the cows are tied in. I continue to watch and another cow seems to be in active labor at this time. No one seems to be in attendance right now so I am hoping this little calf doesn't fall out onto the metal grate...the other cow had hay under it where her calf was born. It's interesting, but it raises a lot of questions in my mind about how this all should happen. Some how it doesn't feel right as I watch...I hope I am wrong because I know little about farm animals and how nature works for them. This does seem to be a maternity ward of sorts after tonight, but I am still wondering what those cows are doing all in a row, roped up by the neck in such a tight space. I wish I could judge better what I see but I am not at all qualified, I only know that what I see doesn't feel right to me. November 29, 2009 Justin:I've been watching a calf be born for a few hours and now it has been rolling around on the filthy floor away from its mother for an hour and 22 minutes as of right this minute. The longest I have ever seen a calf go without care is about 12 minutes. I am wondering what the people who take care of them are doing right now. I'm glad I am not that animal or its mother. Merci d'avance.... December 28, 2009 pbgvdad:Pretty gross. They forgot to restrain his head, so he can crap on the same hay he eats. December 28, 2009 pbgvdad:correction: "...her head,...she eats." December 28, 2009 pbgvdad:Looks like she's still a good milker. Otherwise, I'd think maybe they're keeping her confined like a veal calf to soften up her meat before slaughter. December 28, 2009 pbgvdad:On the other hand, they may be holding her for the vet school's large animal dissections. December 28, 2009 pbgvdad:They are much too heavy to carry in one piece. Vet school labs usually make them fast a couple of days to clean them out. Then they have the student lead them into the lab before conking them on the head. January 2, 2010 Diane:Why is this cow alone and singled out from the others- sickness? I guess it is a vet hospital/school as well. Sad looking cow anyway, it looks that way to me. February 6, 2010 BeauEvil:@pbgvdad Quit trying so hard to ridicule dairy farming. For example, "soften up her meat before slaughter". Lol! Do you enen realize that these are DAIRY cows?! The meat from a dried up old cow isn't eaten by humans. "Vet school lab dissections"? Lol! Can you dream up any worse BS? Add a commentRating:--![]()

John:Do these animals ever leave their stalls, this system looks extremely cruel.
